MEDIA RELEASE October 29, 2012
Bridge2care – Carers’ Bridge Climb for Cancer Research
Bridge2care is an event which has been created to raise awareness of carers and to celebrate their valuable contribution to society.
More than 40 excited participants celebrated the launch of Carers’ Week 2012 by climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge with BridgeClimb Sydney on Sunday 14 October. Amongst the climbers were disability support carers, nurses, students, foster carers, children and adults with disabilities, support families and cancer survivors. Organisations such as Hills Nursing Service and Centacare Waitara put forward staff teams who fundraised for the Australian Cancer Research Foundation, this year’ selected charity.
We embarked on our shared adventure as a diverse group of Carers headed for a Challenge and experience we would never forget!
“Through bridge2care we are acknowledging the importance of carers in our community. This is just the start of what I am hoping will grow to become a national annual event representing people with a disability, with mental health challenges, dementia, the aged, children and babies, cancer and chronic pain sufferers, and more, “ said the buoyed event founder, Bo Lukich-Yang. “Carers are like bridges – symbols of strength, courage and character who give selflessly each and every day for others in need. This is for them!”
It all started with Lukich-Yang’s personal advocacy for helping others within our society, aided by a grant of $250 from Carers NSW for Carers’ Week, along with a donation of $1,000 from a parent of a child with a disability who passionately believes in this cause. Bridge2care was also supported by the donation of one Bridge climb from Berowra & District Community Bank a Branch of Bendigo Bank.
The inaugural bridge2care event has also included the option to sponsor a climber in support of Australian Cancer Research Foundation via Everyday Hero www.everdayhero.com.au/event/bridge2care which to date over $9000 has been raised.
